What Does the Sydney HSC Music Exam Cover?

24 Oct 2024

When I first came to Australia in 2020 to attend high school, I was surprised to find that music could be chosen as an elective in the general HSC exams. What shocked me even more was learning that composition is a compulsory component! So, what exactly does the Australian HSC music exam include?

Let’s break down the key details of the HSC music exam today!

Key Features of the HSC Music Exam in Australia

Unlike the common perception of "one exam determines everything," Australia’s HSC music exam is different. The final exam only accounts for 40% of the total score, while the remaining 60% comes from internal assessments and coursework throughout the school year. This means that students don’t need to worry about a single exam mishap—consistent effort during the year plays a significant role in their overall performance.

There are three levels to choose from for the HSC music exam: Music 1, Music 2, and Music Extension. However, Music Extension can only be taken if you've completed Music 2.

Four Core Components of the HSC Music Exam

Regardless of whether you choose Music 1 or Music 2, the exam mainly focuses on four core areas:

  1. Musicology (Music Theory)
This is the written exam component of the HSC. It tests your understanding of music theory and assesses your ability to deeply analyze and interpret musical pieces.

  2. Aural (Listening and Analysis)
This section also forms part of the written exam, where you’ll need to listen to musical works and analyze them. It evaluates your ability to understand various aspects of the music, such as melody, rhythm, and harmony.

  3. Performance
This is your opportunity to showcase your musical talents. You can choose either a solo or ensemble performance, whether it’s instrumental or vocal. This part is where you can truly let your musical skills shine.

  4. Composition
Each student is required to submit an original composition, along with a detailed explanation of the creative process and inspiration behind the work. This is a key area where creativity is tested.

How is the Final Score Determined?

The final HSC music score is a combination of internal assessments and the HSC written exam. This means that your consistent effort throughout the school year will directly influence your overall results.
